Fiber Gourmet Light Pasta

This is a repost from the crash, originally posted around May 20, 2007.

Fiber Gourmet contacted me and asked if I would try their product and write a review. Well I just finished my Tomatoes Shrimp and Zucchini over Fettuccini using their light pasta and it was delish! The pasta had a great texture and cooked up nicely.

I’m a whole grain girl but for those who don’t like the whole grain stuff (or have husband that are resistant like me) this is a great alternative. It has a WHOPPING 18g of fiber a serving and only adds up to 2 points! I can come up with a dozen ways to use this in light low point meals.

Has anyone else tried it?

Just as an FYI for anyone who REALLY counts calories. The Fibre Gourmet company has done a little trick that is commonly used lately to make their food appear lower in calories - they've already subtracted the calories that make up the fibre for you in the nutritional information! What I mean is: fat calories + carb calories + protein calories = 200 - fibre calories (18g *4 cal each) = 130.

18 grams of fiber per serving?! That is way too much. I know it knocks down points values, but this new trend in food manufacturing (artificially enhancing the amount of fiber to absurd levels) is disturbing. A reasonable level of fiber in your diet is healthy, but more is not necessarily healthier, and at this level is definitely not better for you. Too much fiber in your diet leads to poor nutrient absorption.

Moderation. In ALL things - including the things we've deemed healthy.

Good points guys. Like I said I'm more of a whole wheat girl, really if it isn't whole grain I don't bother anymore. I just wish I could get the husband on board!!

Sarah: I'm not sure why that would be considered a "trick". The FDA regulations (21 CFR 101.9(c))themselves say to subtract the insoluble fiber before calculating the calories. It doesn't just "appear" lower in calories, it *is* lower in calories. I can't even think of any other way to make a food which is truly lower in calories than by upping the insoluble fiber content.

Marie: Since 72.5% of the people who claim that the amount of fiber they consume is "about right" still doesn't meet their Recommended Daily Allowance for fiber (see the USDA's Diet and Health Knowledge Survey, Table 1.3b; the numbers are even worse for groups who acknowledge they don't get enough), I think not having enough fiber is more of a problem than too much for most people.

Little typo: That line should read "still don't meet".
