Soup vs. Candy

No one won, I think it was a tie.

Let me back up.

Tonight was my first experience Trick-or-Treating with the toddler.  It was a BLAST! I really thought I would be ok.  I had no cravings for the candy until we came home and dumped it out.

Then it was

“Oh just one small piece of chocolate won’t kill me”

Which turned into

“One dot won’t kill me.”

All of a sudden, it became

“I already had one I might as well…”

What did I do to stop the insanity?

I made SOUP!

That’s right, soup.  And why not? It’s low in points, it fills you up and it's much better for you then candy.

I knew I wouldn’t stop eating so I decided to cut my loses and save the night with soup.  Now I’m full and over my candy munch attack.

This candy is coming to school with me tomorrow!

Morning Scale Reading: 142.5
Food Points
smoothie made with lite flavored yogurt, banana and frozen strawberries and an english muffin with almond butter and low sugar jelly (both split with the toddler) 4
Crab Cake sandwich on a Whole Wheat Potato Roll with a side of 8
tiny bag of miniature kisses (candy given in class) 2
pear 1
handful of corn chips 3
chinese take out - steamed chicken and mixed veggies with my homemade dipping sauce. (soy sauce, ground ginger, ground red pepper and a bit of sweetener) 4
Candy cave (estimate) 7
Progresso vegetarian vegetable soup 3
Total 32
Daily Activity Log
just a trick-or-treat walk - does that count? ;~)

I've read that soup is a great appetite suppressant. I wish I was a soup fan. I'm not but I'll try anything to get this eating under control.

Kudos to you for only eating 7 points worth of candy. That's a major accomplishment!

I counted trick or treating as exercise trying to keep up with the kids going door to door was a workout! I had a few pieces of candy too! I can't believe how many calories a fun size bar has. Averages out to about 100 cals per bar! I can't believe I used to sit and eat those one after another without even thinking about it. You could easily eat your days worth of calories or points away with in minutes! No wonder my butt was sooo big! I am much more careful now that I am aware of everything going in my mouth. So far since August 1st I have lost 23 pounds by watching calories alone! Anyway the boys got a few boxes of cracker jacks too and those are only 120 calories per box. There's only 1 oz in there but it seems like a lot more because of the shape of the box!

Hi Roni:

Anyone who can walk away from candy & starts making soup deserves an award!

When I purchased my Halloween treats I made certain it could be returned if the boxes were unopened.

Around 8:30pm, things started to slow down & I had two boxes left over & the grocery store was still open. Before I could change my mind I got into my car & drove to the grocery store. By 8:40pm the "evil candy" was the grocery store's problem & NOT mine.

I love it when good triumphs over evil!!!!!

Soup is the best! We made some last Sunday with all kinds of vegies - rainbow watercress, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, celery, onion, and 3 types of beans....amazing! My weigh was yesterday and I lost 3.6lbs!!! 26 total...33 to go. I will be making more soup this weekend too for sure!

Tried a few pieces of candy last night - and the taste alone of the chocolate turned me off - I think I've been eating so healthy...that my taste buds are telling me...Ick! For me that is a huge Non Scale Victory!!!!!!

I had the exact same problem! I was completely fine till all that candy was dumped out of my toddler's bucket! It just looked so good! And one piece turned into 5! Ugghhh! But today's a new day, right?

I was super proud of myself, I didn't have any candy from my 12 year olds stash! But I hope I can keep my hands out of the candy jar! Maybe some soup is in order.

I totally understand. I ate like a saint the entire day and thought that I would not succumb to the call of those little chocolate bars. I ended up having a few items (but not a complete blow out). But as soon as my mind began thinking, "well, I might as well have..." I went upstairs and put on my workout clothes and I completed a DVD workout. And with all of that, I still lost a half pound. I was glad I did the workout and drank a ton of water - it made me feel better and today, I am not obsessed with eating more crap. I am back on plan and doing well. Oh, and I sent all of the chocolate candy (which my toddler doesn't need, anyway) with my husband to work. Looks like we made it through without losing our grip - I feel a little proud of this milestone.

Hey. wow I'm really surprised that soup helps that much. I always have these really bad cravings for candy and sweets too...and I never thought about a low cal soup. this is my first time reading your page and I want you to know...that you are very inspiring. I am 21 and weigh 155. when I was 12 I weighed 185...so...haha. I've grown a couple inches but still a little chubby around the mid section. I found it was really easy to lose weight if you had a good community supporting you. I personally use this site....

It's hosted by daily strength. you should check it out! I bet if you shared your story, that you would be able to inspire alot of people. Good luck!

Hi Roni:

I love your stories - They make me laugh and cry but mostly make me feel like I am not crazy or alone. I have only written a comment one other time so I have a feeling this is the wrong place now, but what has happened with your "Women's World) ( I think) photo shoot and article? Should we start buying it now so we don't miss it? Thank You, Julie D.

I had a successful Halloween too! I had...get this, not one piece of candy! Roni, I would have been like you and if I ate one, it would have been all over! I made beef stew in my crock pot, so we didn't have to resort to getting pizza, and it worked, and I exercised too! What's up with that? I am down 23 pounds and my goal is to be at my goal weight by my birthday which is in March. I survived!! Now, if I can do that through the holidays, then that would be great!

Hi Roni! My toddler actually saved me from eating any candy! lol He would go to two or three houses, fill his hands with candy, and then at the next house he would dump his candy into their bowl and choose some more. . .we continued this pattern for about ten houses and then gave up lol
We tried to get him to put the candy in the bag but he didn't want to! It was disappointing for me but he had a blast and looked adorable the entire time, so that made up for it! ;)
Glad you had a good time! :)
